Improving The Hospital Experience

By Jansen Wilhelmsen

No one looks forward to a hospital stay and no matter how wonderful your staff may be a hospital can never be as comfortable as one's own home. However, there are a few features you can offer patients that will make their time a bit more pleasant.

Lying in bed for hours and days can leave anyone bored, and there are two types of amenities which can make the time pass more quickly and pleasantly. First on the list would be the internet service you offer. What makes it interesting for them are the services like high-quality and speedy Wi-Fi. Downloading and browsing the net would only be some of the things they can do. If this is also offered in the cafeteria and in the common areas, that would be good too. Everybody would be happy with this kind of service.

Another source of entertainment that you can provide is satellite television, such as acquiring a DirecTV commercial account, is an excellent idea. By using DirecTV, patients and visitors can enjoy as many as 120 channels or more of a wide range of programming. Your patients can catch their favorite sporting events, watch the news or watch movies as they recover from illnesses or surgery, which makes the time pass a bit more pleasantly. Offering Wi-Fi and DirecTV is an excellent option in doctor's offices, as well, to provide something for patients to do while they wait for an appointment.

Fear is always natural for a patient staying at the hospital and spiritual advice can heal the soul. Spiritualists who are available within 24 hours would be great to offer their spiritual care services for the patients and their families. A chapel and a non-religious reflection room are offerings many hospitals do have but it would be good to have some spiritual caregivers that offer different types of spiritual advice for different religions. Offering non-religious comfort would be good too for those who do not practice any.

If possible, it's nice for patients to enjoy a change of scene. Many patients are encouraged to get up and walk around, and others can be moved using a wheelchair. It is an excellent idea to offer some garden areas where a patient can enjoy fresh air and sunshine in a lovely setting.

Your dcor also can be helpful in making a hospital stay as pleasant as possible, especially in patient rooms and waiting areas. Many colors have been shown to be uplifting to people's moods, so choose soothing colors that make it easy for patients to rest and relax. Artwork also brightens a room, especially nature scenes, so consider adding this to the room dcor. While the quality of patient care should always be the top priority at any hospital, seeking ways to make patient experiences more pleasant certainly can be one important component of your care objectives.
