Importance Of Mobile Crane Inspections

By Tanisha Berg

The use of cranes in industries has grown over the years. With modern technology, better and more advanced machines are finding their way into all industries, big or small. The existing challenges in this field however are still hindering this penetration. Together with the desire to improve on quality of products, these factors have resulted in the need for improved mobile crane inspections. The mobile inspectors visit companies and sites where the cranes are used to offer their services.

All persons and businesses owning cranes are required to conduct regular inspection on them. This process must be done by a registered certified technician. Depending on the state and the type of cranes, jurisdictions set different intervals for inspection, ranging from three months to two years. However, businesses can even chose to do such operations on a monthly or weekly basis.

Apart from being a symbol of law, the technicians are an important source of information relating to the field of cranes. They not only update firms on related legislation but can also offer advice when one wants to purchase a crane or spare parts. They are also abreast with knowledge in modern technology and therefore are the right people to consult when a firm is in a dilemma.

If for instance a firm is confused on whether to buy a used crane or a new one, the technicians may provide them with the information that might facilitate the decision-making process. The same applies in purchase of spare parts. Delayed or wrong decisions might lead to losses especially if the need was urgent.

Before buying these machines especially the second hand ones, investors should enlist such professionals to assess them first so as to ensure one does not spend on something that will not meet their needs. A major benefit of servicing is that it prolongs the life of machines. Gears must be greased or oiled properly.

When the greasing and oiling is done incorrectly or less regularly, the parts tend to wear off more rapidly. Electricity supply should also be regulated to prevent overload, which may weaken the system. Small malfunction issues can be handled by the operating staff. However, in case of any problem beyond their skills, such work should be directed to the correct person.

Safety training for people working with or around crane areas should be mandatory. The technicians have long years of experience in cranes operations hence it can be a good idea to ask them to teach your workforce. Some jurisdictions insist that safety meetings should be held before daily commencement of work. Having such individuals to assist will therefore facilitate these processes.

Some jurisdictions may also insist that you carry out safety meetings and checkups before beginning daily operations. All companies should therefore strive to get the services of these experts. They not only reduce operation costs but also promote safety and efficiency at the workplace. The importance of inspection cannot be overemphasized. Besides, their costs are not that high.
